The Art Making:

My subject matter is the human figure, as I have witnessed directly, intimately, and from unwavering observation. With a keen sensibility for everything around me, my observations ignite the impulse to make and create and to maintain vigilance for the visual language present in everything close at hand and locally obtainable. At the root of my interest in the human form is my search for understanding our “identity” and “who we are”. My goal is to work with compelling arrangements exploring this complex idea, compositions varying from frieze-like rows, clustered groupings or singular forms.  I arrange figures as they are linked in solidarity, familiarity, and in working alliance. Overall, I explore continuums which are gender and age specific, expose economics, class, or a constancy of human behavior. Ultimately, my paintings explore the overarching qualities of our humanness, our essence.

The Art Maker:

Jayne grew up in the Great North Woods of NH.  A visual artist since early childhood, she was greatly influenced by her high school instructor, Robert Hughes.  At age 16, she attended summer sculpting workshops at the White Mts. Festival of the Arts in the mountain valley of Jefferson, NH.  There, she worked alongside Hughes, Jean Bartolli, Cabot Lyford, Winslow Eaves, visiting artists from Montreal, and many others. This was an invaluable experience which hooked her to a life of artistic discovery and exploration.

Jayne received her BFA from the University of NH in painting and continued her figure study with several groups working with the model.

Jayne was the recipient of 3 Currier Gallery of Art awards through the NH Art Association and the Currier Museum, the Lacroix Award for painting, the Holland Sister’s Award and others. Her work has been exhibited throughout New England and is in numerous private collections in the US and Canada. She is an active member of the Ogunquit Art Assoc., Ogunquit, ME.
